My Thoughts on Seche-Vite Fast Dry Top Coat

Posted on: November 5, 2012

The question: Is Seche-Vite Fast Dry Top Coat bad for you?

I have been curious and wondering about Seche-Vite Fast Dry Top Coat (SV) for quite a while now. Since I have nothing but time I my hands I decided to do some research into the ingredients listed on the bottle. We all know about the warning included on every bottle of SV.
“WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the state of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. FLAMMABLE KEEP AWAY FROM HEAT OR FLAME. KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN.”

😷Since I use this product daily, for the most part, I have had a small concern. Even though I am not having any plans of becoming pregnant I wonder about my girls using it, and others. I went on an online search of the ingredients listed on the bottle. The first one I looked up was toluene. Toluene is one of the 3 free ingredients, that seems to be avoided at all costs, yet is is listed #2 on the SV. Toluene is an organic product found in a tree from Columbia. It is used as a solvent, jet fuel additive, Formula 1 race car fuel, adhesives, lacquers, printing ink and is used to remove cocaine from the cocoa leaves used by Coca-Cola. It can be used to break open blood red cells to extract hemoglobin. Some gasoline stations try to substitute toluene in their gas because it is not taxed at 40% like other gasoline ingredients. But it breaks down the engine of your car faster so that is why not used for everyday gasoline. No mention if any carcinogen.
In fact there was no mention of any carcinogen which is what causes cancer, in any of the ingredients listed on the bottle.
😷😱But then, I came across a page from theCosmetic Ingredient Review. Yea, after I’d read all about the ingredients. The CIR participates with the EPA and IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer). According to the CIR all nail hardeners and fast dry top coats contain formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a biggie on 3 Free list, but if a product has less than 2% of an ingredient it does not have to be listed as an ingredient. According to the CIR, IARC and EPA all fast dry top coats and nail hardener products contain, less than 2% of formaldehyde. In 1987, the IARC classified formaldehyde as a “probable human carcinogen” and in 2004 the IARC & EPA both classified formaldehyde as a KNOWN HUMAN CARCINOGEN.
so it is the formaldehyde NOT LISTED as an ingredient that warrants the warning from the state of California. But, and this is important, both the IARC & EPA made it clear this was the industrial use of formaldehyde and it was for the direct inhaling of formaldehyde at its purest form that can cause a rare nasal cancer in humans. They have a link to leukemia but not enough of one to say it is connected with leukemia. Both agencies said these warnings were not applicable, and not found in the cosmetic and personal care application of formaldehyde.
😝I went to the SV website at Seche and after reading ever page and all the magazine mentions, provided by them, I found no mention of the warning message and no mention of formaldehyde.
💅Final Thoughts: I do not believe SV can harm you in any way. I think if you were a nail technician who applied SV constantly for an 8 hour day, every day, I might be a little worried. But, the way I use SV is probably way more than you do, which is daily, I do not think there is any thing that will harm me.
If I was pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant? I would most definetly err on the side of that poor little peanut inside you has no say in the matter and I would stop using SV until after my baby was born. As the mother of 2 beautiful kids, I know first hand how important what you do to your body is to the baby you are creating. Sometimes things that don’t bother me could bother that little peanut. That’s just me.

My beautiful babies. We were at the beach, hence the life jackets. Drew so badly wanted to give his sister, Jilly a kiss but it was hard to get close to her with all that padding! I am so lucky to have these precious people. They are my whole world.

💅As always, thanks for stopping by. Let me know what you think about SV, do you love it or hate it?

Judi, thank you so much for taking the time to post this insightful information! Have a great week xoxo

Great information Judi. I hadn’t heard how coca-cola used Toulene, while I don’t drink it I find that pretty upsetting. It’s amazing what companies will do! I love SV, but the smell really bothers me but its no worse that what I put on my hair. I don’t find myself discontinuing it anytime soon. Your kids are beautiful! Very sweet photo 🙂

😘Thank You!

One of the things I discovered today is that McDonald’s chicken nuggets and Wendy’s French fries contain dimethicone, which is silicone basically. I thought the French fries were the old ones but it is the new all natural, hand cut fries. That really bothers me, even though I never eat either one! Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting! 😘

Not ALL fast dry top coats have formadehyde anymore. I used a big round bottle of blue tinted top coat for 19 years (from a Sally’s) and loved it. Shiniest nails, dried so fast, went on perfect…then, they reformated and made it formaldehyde free – it is awful now!!!!! I have tried sv, but am so OCD about my nails – SV pulled the polish to wherever it was, so it it was on the line I had made with my clean off stick, it was pull polish away or into cuticle area – sounds crazy I’m sure, but it did. Out the Door gets too hard and I get cracks a day or two later. I got an led kit and would do gel then two reg polish and let dry completely then a gel top coat and love the look so much, but my nails got to thin with all the prepping… Can anyone recommend another truly good quick dry?

Thanks so much for the comment. The quick dry topcoat I like besides SV are: butter LONDON PD Quick Topcoat and Sally Hansen has a fast dry topcoat in a red bottle. Those 2 work just as well,if not better than SV.
Good luck!

Betty’s Blog

I have been a busy dog because my Mom has this new seizure disorder and its up to me to keep her home when she needs to. I also let her know when it's time to take me for my walk, my neighbors like me too.
My mom won't let me leave the yard but the other day I had to wake mom up and take her outside so she could call 911 for the neighbor lady who was having a heart attack. The firemen tried to take me with them but my mom, and I,, both said no.
It's starting to warm up and we have lots of birds and squirrels,. My mom doesn't like me chasing the squirrels, or the birds because we have a nest in one of the trees. She said we have to be quiet. Maybe I can send you a pic of the baby birds? I'll try.
Have a happy spring, my mom and are going to!
Love, Betty
