How I Take Care Of My Nails & Hands

Posted on: February 12, 2013

Sally Hansen Commander in Chic, my very favorite nail polish of all. This picture is about a year old. I’m showing this picture so you can see how far my nails and hands have come in just a year.
I am asked over and over to do a video about nail care, hand care, etc…. So I will try to that here first, then I will try a video.

Catrice Sold Out Forever this picture was taken last summer. This is the length I like my nails to be. Right now, they are too long.

Sally Hansen LUSTRE in Azure (this was sent to me for review by SH). This is the length my nails are right now.
The first thing I do is to shape my nails while I still have on polish. The reason for this is your nail lines and fingers are not all equal. If you shape your nails naked, then polish them, you will have uneven looking nails. By shaping them with the polish on, you know what they will look like polished. Makes sense, right?
The next thing I do is cut them using nail clippers. Eeeek! I hear you all screaming about that, but that’s what I do.

These are the clippers I use. I clip once in the middle and once on each side. Sometimes, but not always I will go back with a file and smooth out a rough edge.
Once I have them the length I want, I remove the nail polish using 100% pure acetone, always . I know there has been controversies about the use of acetone but, the man who is the manicurist for CHANEL says acetone is way better for your nails because it gets in there, gets the job done and evaporates quickly. The non-acetone removers have to be held onto the nail bed for a few minutes to break up the lacquer in order to remove it. And that is way harder on your nails than the acetone. I go with what he says. Plus it works great, in and out, I’m not a patient girl.

I use this pump bottle and refill it from the big bottle of acetone from Sally’s beauty supply. Another tip? I save my make up remover wipes and I use those to remove my polish. They work great, have just enough texture to remove stubborn polish, leave no lint behind and the price is right!

Once I’ve removed all the polish, I check the sides very carefully because I do not like any “leftover” polish in the sides, I always apply Nail Envy by OPI . I’ve used Nail Envy for so many years I can’t remember. All I know is when I quit getting acrylics all those years ago my nails were a mess. My niece, the hairdresser, told me about OPI Nail Envy and it has worked great for me. It is about $16 a bottle in my area. J C Penney’s sells it in their hair salon and twice a year they have a BOGO sale, that is when I buy mine. I would not ever be without Nail Envy by OPI .

I have had a lot of questions about Gelous base coat. I do not use it and probably never will, unless they quit making Nail Envy. My understanding is Gelous is a base coat and not a treatment product. It adds thickness to your nails and does provide some protection. That is according to the Sally’s Beauty Supply website. Several people have asked me about peeling and breaking using the Gelous and my answer would be to wear a layer of Nail Envy and then use your Gelous and see your nails improve. When I first started using Nail Envy I would use it over the top of my polish as well. Only until my nails got good. Good? My nails are freaking awesome! 😘 Sorry, I had to throw that in there! Well, they are!
Another tip for you. If you have no nail polish remover you can remove polish with polish. Just paint the polish on your nails and wipe off, usually both polishes will come off. I do that when I’m removing a glitter or some other stubborn polish, makes removal easier.

After all this, I am done and I go to bed. I paint my nails in the morning. I don’t know why, but I think it is good for my nails to have a night of Nail Envy all to themselves. ? Odd? I know but hey it works because like I said, my nails are freaking awesome! Okay, I’m getting tired, and corny, so good night all! 🌙

To see my You Tube video.

I will tell about cuticle and hand care soon, I promise.

💅 As always, thanks for stopping by.

Betty’s Blog

I have been a busy dog because my Mom has this new seizure disorder and its up to me to keep her home when she needs to. I also let her know when it's time to take me for my walk, my neighbors like me too.
My mom won't let me leave the yard but the other day I had to wake mom up and take her outside so she could call 911 for the neighbor lady who was having a heart attack. The firemen tried to take me with them but my mom, and I,, both said no.
It's starting to warm up and we have lots of birds and squirrels,. My mom doesn't like me chasing the squirrels, or the birds because we have a nest in one of the trees. She said we have to be quiet. Maybe I can send you a pic of the baby birds? I'll try.
Have a happy spring, my mom and are going to!
Love, Betty
