I have been using the different brands of gel finish polishes that have become a trend in the last couple of years.  My nails, as you can see from my photos (sorry) are in bad shape but I’m working on improving them and I think I’ll get them back to usual.

I really like Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab system for an honest gel like finish.  Before I go into more details I will reveal that even though I used this system as directed I did have a healthy coat of Nail Envy by OPI applied to my bare naked nails the night before I used this system.  That’s what is giving me hope of my nails returning to their former “glory”!

As directed I applied the gel lab base coat and let dry for 1-2 minutes, then I applied my favorite Deborah Lippmann nail polish color and let dry for 1-2 minutes and then applied the gel lab top coat.   I believe you could use any nail polish with the Gel Lab, and still have good results, but I’ve drunk the DL kool aid and I love this brand. For all kinds of reasons not just the great colors.

I started with Deborah Lippmann Modern Love, which is a nice mix between a nude beige and a nude pink.  Again, I apologize for the shape of my nails, you can see in these photos how bad they are.  Bad nails and all though this Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab system is a winner.  The finish is truly gel like and has some staying power.

About a week later I used, as directed the Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab system with the color I Feel Pretty.  I’m not sure, but this might be a Nordstrom exclusive.  This is a great color for me with my skin tone and I feel is an excellent choice for an “everyday” polish.  Again, the gel finish is awesome and has lasted 6 days with the tiniest bit of tip wear showing.  It’s so small no one would even notice.  The past couple of days I have been in the house because it’s been raining so I am  caught up with house cleaning, which usually means a polish change but this is still a beautiful color, has not faded or chipped and I am going to leave on a few more days.

As usual with all Deborah Lippmann nail polish application is a breeze, I used 2 coats but I know I needed only 1, some habits are just hard to break, like always using 2 coats to maximize the color of a polish.  I did have to use 2 coats with Modern Love to smooth out some streaking but I think that has more to do with the bad shape my nails are in right now.

FINAL THOUGHTS:   From the 5-7 ‘gel finish’ brands I’ve tried over the past few weeks the Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab is by far the best.  The gel finish is definitely there, and the staying power is ah-mazing!

The Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab mini kit with the base and top coat, is available as a limited edition at Nordstrom for $24.  Deborah Lippmann also has out a Gel Lab Pro kit for $40, full size.  I have not tried the Pro kit.  When I have used up my current supply of the DLGL system I will definetly try the Pro Lab kit.

💅 (This system was sent to me for review by a PR firm, which in no way affects my thoughts of a product.  I will always give an honest review, and I will always disclose when items have been sent to me for review.)

I know it’s been a while, since Dec 13th, 2013 to be exact. That is the day I had a grand Mal seizure which started my journey of learning about seizures, strokes, the difference between .. Etc….

I won’t bore you with the details but I am back to almost 100%. I have come to realize I will never be seizure free but I can live with this disorder so I count myself lucky. Please don’t feel sorry for me. I feel like I owe many of you an explanation as to why I was here one day and gone the next. I enjoy this little blog of mine and have every intention of continuing with it.

So, please bear with me, stay tuned. I have some awesome new polish to show you. Have you heard CHANEL has changed their formula for real and, at this time offer only 14 colors. That is one story I would like to find out more about and I hope you’ll be interested, as well.

A couple of years away and there new trends to review, the gel nail without a light (or gel for that matter), the 10X shine that seems to be making the rounds. And of course the new CHANEL formula.  The pictures are Camelia.  This is one of the new formulas and I love it!  Like most of you I’m disappointed in the color choices by I am going to give CHANEL the chance to bring our favorite colors into the mix.  May anyone?  As in the color May, my all time CHANEL favorite!

I will have a full review of the new formula coming soon.  Let me know if there are any others you would like reviewed.

Without being sappy I have missed my blog friends so, so much. I hope to hear from you all, and soon!

mwahhh!!!

As most of you know my beautiful Mom passed away in July of 2013. Some days it seems like a lifetime ago and then days Ike today it seems like last week.
One of my favorite times with her was giving her manicures. I did this once a week as she had the fastest growing fingernails of anyone I ever saw. She always had the most beautiful nails. After her seizures she just wanted them cut back with a no muss, no fuss approach so that is what I did. I would brings several bottles of nail polish for her to pick out and she always liked the brightest colors. I think it was because she had glaucoma and. macular-degeneration, so the bright colors were easiest for her to see .
Here are are her favorites:

IMG_6380.JPG
Barry M Bright Pink was one of her favorites. She often remarked on how well it lasted. Her most favorite color was purple.

She especially liked the Catrice brand out of Germany, which is a great polish and if you have a chance to pick so up I hope you do. Mom’s favorite was “Heavy Metallilac” and “Even More Heavy Metalilac”, which are both a gorgeouse purple duo-chrome. Thank you to my friend Carla for sending these to me. I also love Heavy Metalilac but can’t quite bring myself to wear it just yet. Soon…

Since the nut doesn’t far too far away from the tree, she also loved her some CHANEL polish…

The other thing my Mom loved was her kids and Grandkids. She wore this one for her great-granddaughter Audrey. She would often times ask me to bring this one for her. More for the name than the color. As you probably know this is called “For Audrey” from China Glaze. This was made to be the exact color of a Tiffany’s box.

IMG_3435.JPG
Although Mom wasn’t there for Jilly’s wedding, she was in spirit. She helped Jilly decide which polish to wear. Not only did Jilly wear this polish but she had all her bridal wear it as well. I think it was a great choice.

Happy Birthday Mom. You will never be forgotten.

💅As always, thanks for stopping by!

Wet n Wild Pop Art Collection, the few items I was able to get before they sold out in my area, which was in 2 days time, were 2 of the eyeshadow trios and 2 nail polishes. All the other trios and nail polish have been sold out. The first time I found these I picked up these 2 nail polishes because I liked the colors. The other colors in this collection was an orange, a white and a yellow. Not my colors. When I first found them I was able to get 4 e/s trios for a friend who lives in the UK, and the 2 that I picked up for me. I have not been able to find the other 2 that I wanted. But that’s okay, I’m very happy with the 2 that I have.
The colors are very bright but they blend out to a very wearable color and I am loving them.
If you see these in your town and think you might want them don’t hesitate to pick up because as limited editions they will be gone soon.

Wet n Wild Wild Shine Limited Edition from Pop Art Collection. I know this is a busy picture but there was a lot of information to get on it. Wet n Wild Wild Shines in who is Ultra Violet? And Teal Slowly and See. These are odd names but if you are familiar with the Pop Art Craze, which is what these are patterned after, then you probably have heard of the band the “Velvet Underground” which was produced by Andy Warhol. That is where all the names have come. There is a girl in one song called “Ultra Violet. There is a song called “Peel Slowly and See“.

20130905-174904.jpg
The blue color is not one I would call teal but knowing where the name comes from, makes more sense. The eye shadow trios are also named from the “Velvet Underground” record produced by Andy Warhol.

20130905-175038.jpg
I’m very happy with the 4 pieces I was able to get from the Wet n Wild Pop Art Limited Edition Collection.
Let me know if you picked any of these up. WnW makes a great eyeshadow along with a great nail polish. The WnW Wild Shines came in #7 on my Top 10 list of Nail Polish Comparison by Brand. Which, as you all know I compared almost 40 brands, so that was a pretty good showing for this 99 cent polish.

💅 As always, thanks for stopping by.

I’m not exactly comfortable with make up reviews, I’d much rather show my nails than my face but I am so impressed with this mascara from NYC, I had to show again, this time on its own. This is such a great product it deserves its own review.
Ill let the pictures speak for themselves.

With the NYC Big City Bold Curl Mascara, one coat

20130820-105951.jpg

20130820-110134.jpg
This mascara promises up to 12% more volume – check
This mascara promises up to 99% more curl –check
Both promises were kept with this mascara and really how often does a mascara live up to its claims on the packaging?. Not very often but this one did. I’m definetly buying this one again.

NYC Big City, Bold Curl mascara can be found in most drug stores.

UPDATE: second coat of NYC Big Bold Curl Mascara, with a bit of eyeshadow and liner on bottom lashes. Looks like I have on false eyelashes. Being a girl of the 70’s I like this look! I dI d not use an EYELAS curler, or an eyelash comb.

💅 As always, thanks for stopping by!

So last week was a great week for receiving packages in the mail. The first package I received was from Sally Hansen

20130819-203633.jpg
As you can see this box was loaded with all types of products to try. Including a NYC BIG City Curl Mascara.
A couple days later from butter London I received this box:

20130819-204334.jpg
I was so excited to receive all new make up items from butter London. I must confess I did look in the box for some polish but what they sent is great! Part of why I was so excited to try this new make up line from butter London is there is no where near where
I live that I can purchase it. They were kind enough to send me a cream blush called Naughty Biscuit,

20130819-204842.jpg
It is much softer in color in person than what is showing in my monitor. I love cream blushes, I think cream blushes are a woman’s best friend past the age of 50.
They sent a Wink eye pencil in the color Brown Sugar. It is so soft and easy to use. I wrote once about the Estée Lauder eye pencils, well this one is just as good, maybe better.

20130819-205206.jpg
But the most exciting thing I this package for me was the Blink Mascara in the color Inky Six

20130819-205336.jpg
That is the prettiest blue mascara, EVER! And with my blue eyes I knew it would be my best friend in no time.
Before mascara:

20130819-205923.jpg
I had on L’Oreal Magic Nude foundation, the new blush Naughty Biscuit from butter London and a MAC eyeshadow, for the before picture. Then I added 1 coat of the NYC Big City Curl Mascara, let it dry and then added a coat of the Inky Six from butter London.

20130819-210159.jpg
I DID NOT USE AN EYELASH CURLER. My eyelashes look like I did, but I did not. I love both these mascaras. The NYC Big City Curl lived up to its name and the butter LONDON Inky Six just added a little extra oomph.

I must say, I had a Dr. Appointment today and I haven’t been feeling so great, but I got so many compliments today and I think it was the combination of the make up and the mascaras.

Thanks so much to SALLY HANSEN and to butter LONDON for providing me with these items to review. I look forward to doing more make up reviews and I think the butter London make up line is going to be a huge hit. I’m not sure when these will hit the stores but I bet you can find them on butter London’s website . I’m headed there because I heard a friend of mine has already picked up the polish call Inky Six and since I have the mascara I most definetly need the polish, right? Again, it doesn’t take much for me to justify a polish purchase!

The NYC Big City Curl Mascara says it will give your lashes up to 99% more curl and up to 12 times the volume. This is one mascara that lives up to its promise. That doesn’t happen that often. NYC Big City curl can be found at most drug stores and is well worth the price. I’ve used L’Oreal Voluminous for so many years but this will be the next mascara I buy.

UPDATE: I did indeed go to butter LONDON’s website
And just to let you know the full line is available, some items have sold out for now, the cream blush is $20, the mascara $20, the eyeliner pencil $18. Besides the great colors I received they have some stunning colors. I hope you check them out. I did not order the Inky Six
Polish because it looks a lot like Scouse which I already have. Otherwise it would’ve been mine!

💅 As always, thanks for stopping by!

There are a few things on my mind these days. One is the use of animal testing for nail polish and which nail polish companies actually do animal testing and which nail polish companies do not do animal testing. The information is so overwhelming and so contradictory,I can’t even begin to tell you, so I decided to stop and let this one simmer a bit. It doesn’t mean I still don’t have questions, like If Zoya nail polish is indeed a company that does no animal testing why no bunny or leaping bunny logo on their bottles? When I searched the company site for vegan, 6 polishes came up, I was told that’s because those are the 6 that are vegan? I read somewhere today that Wet n Wild is a cruelty free product, it’s made in China? China insists on animal testing for cosmetics so how can that be? It breaks my heart that information like that is out there 💔 Leaping Bunnie Logo indicates the company and their suppliers do not do animal testing. So why no logo on brands that have the image of being cruelty free? Those are the kinds of questions I wish I knew the answer to. But, I will let this simmer a bit, until I can find an answer, I’m not so sure I ever will. But, I am always happy to see a Leaping Bunny or a Bunny Logo on a bottle of nail polish. 💜💜

Okay, back to MAC. I made a funny and I didn’t even mean to! Ha! These are my MAC lipsticks:

20130815-160852.jpg
These are what they look like swatched on my arm:

20130815-160922.jpg

I bought another one today, I think it is Viva Glam VI, I am happy to buy these lipsticks because 100% of the purchase price goes to the MAC Aids Foundation (MAF). The purchase of just one lipstick does so much good, it provides:
18 personal birthday cakes delivered to a PLWA on his or her birthday

8 individual tailored nutritious home cooked meals for PLWA (Person Living With Aids)

2 emergency boxes filled with non-perishable food

15 copies of eating well with HIV/AIDS booklets

1 weeks worth of groceries, aout 4 bags, of food for 2 clients

14 blood glucose monitoring strips

37 deliveries of dietetically sound meals

1 private therapeutic recreation session for 1 client

I hospitality kit with hygiene and grooming essentials for a client in a housing program

1 pair of shoes for a child orphaned by AIDS

1 vegetable seed starter packs for a community garden

1 party pack for a child to celebrate Christmas, Easter, and their birthdays. (Of course if not Christian they have packets for other celebrations as well)

1 month of public transport for a woman to travel to and from Doctor visits

2 hours of child care for the woman to travel to the Dr appointments

1 counseling session for a woman who is HIV positive

2 safer sex kits (condoms, lube, dental dams, etc…) and information

1 HIV prevention workshop co ducted by a peer health educator

23 condoms or 23 female condoms

1 rapid rate HIV test

1 monthly medication planner to help a person manage their treatment regimine

All of the above are provided because of one purchase of a tube of lipstick
.

MAC the cult Canadian brand created in 1985 has always been fearless and outspoken and when it comes to the Viva Glam message it has always been loud and clear. The Mac Aids Foundation (MAF) is overseen by a Board of Directors who all come from a varied walk of life. Some are bankers, some are teachers, some are health care providers, the one thing they have in common is a commitment to use the funds of MAF for people who need it the most. The least enfranchised. All are not afraid to go places others have been afraid to go, places where the help is needed the most. These people and communities are the ones at the highest risk and they are totally off the radar, until now.
MAF funds are innovative in funding programs that deal directly with the most marginalized, stigmatized and un-heard victims. MAF celebrates humanity life creativity and individuality, making a difference, one Viva Glam Lipstick at a time. Like I said I ordered a Viva Glam lipstick today, I believe I ordered Viva Glam VI. I’m not sure, I don’t really care if its a color that works for me or not. When I have a few extra $$$ I will buy a Viva Glam lipstick because unlike the issue of the animal testing, I know exactly where and how this money will be used.

I know I’m on a “soap box” today, but these are so e of the things I think about. I know the animal testing is a touchy subject to say the least, and I know the people and children, living with HiV/AIDS is not a problem that can be fixed over night. Neither one of these issues can. But it is nice to know there are people and organizations that care about these issues. So no ore “soap box” from me, I promise. Back to NOTD tomorrow. I have a really pretty one too!
